lighted lamp in the home
practices, like:
1. lighting of lamp near the idols of the dieties. And Also
during other occassions.
2. keeping the fingers straight and joining both hands
each finger touching the corresponding finger of the
other hand, face to face and saaying, namasthe.
3. bending before parents and elders, and touching
their feet.
etc.,.
What is the significance of such practices?
Through some forwards, I received on my e mail, I learnt
the meaning of such practices, which I following without
thinking about them. Now that I realised the meaning of the
thoughtful practices handed over from generation to
generation, I wish to share with my blog readers.
1. Lighting of lamp (part I)
There is a sankrit shloka about the lighted lamp. It goes this
way:
Deepajyothi parabrahma
Deepa sarva thamophahaha
Deepena sadyathe saram
Sandya deepam namostuthe
The deepam is considered to be the supreme lord, who
drives out ignorence which has engulfed us. To him,we
prostrate to deepam to bestow knowledge to achieve to
higher planes of life.
In any hindu family, it is the handed over practice, to light a
lamp or couple of lamps, in front of the diety. And in some
families, a lamp is kept burning ever. These are lamps which
are not kept burning with the help of electricity, but with
oil.
Our seers symbolised the light as knowledge. And that light
will drive away the ignorence. In mundane reality, everyone
knows that light drives away the ignorence.
So, in lighting a lamp, the seers indicated that man in
general will be in the darkness of ignorence. And he should
gain knowledge to drive away the that darkness. Gaining
knowlege helps him to understand the nature around him
and beyond.
The lamp is lighted with the use of oil and wick. Here oil
represents the eartly wants the man possesses. Earthly wants
may be interests in other sex, money, or assests.
The wick sybolises the self or ego. When the ego is burnt
out, the eartly wants are also burn out. And the man gains
knowledge which leads him to higher planes of thinking.

108 beads in japa maala-why?
"With deep respect, I bow to the sun, who travels 2,202 yojanas in half a nimesha." A yojana is about nine American miles; a nimesha is 16/75 of a second. Mathematically challenged readers, get out your calculators! 2,202 yojanas x 9 miles x 75/8 nimeshas = 185,794 m. p. s Basically, Sayana is saying that sunlight travels at 186,000 miles per second!
How could a Vedic scholar who died in 1387 A. D. have known the correct figure for the speed of light? If this was just a wild guess it's the most amazing coincidence in the history of science!
The yoga tradition is full of such coincidences. Take for instance the mala many yoga students wear around their neck. Since these rosaries are used to keep track of the number of mantras a person is repeating, students often ask why they have 108 beads instead of 100.
Part of the reason is that the mala represent the elliptical path of the sun and moon across the sky. Yogis divide the ecliptic into 27 equal sections called nakshatras, and each of these into four equal sectors called paadas, or "steps," marking the 108 steps that the sun and moon take through heaven. Each is associated with a particular blessing force, with which you align yourself as you turn the beads. Traditionally, yoga students stop at the 109th "guru bead,” flip the mala around in their hand, and continue reciting their mantra as they move backward through the beads. The guru bead represents the summer and winter solstices, when the sun appears to stop in its course and reverse directions. In the yoga tradition we learn that we’re deeply interconnected with all of nature. Using a mala is a symbolic way of connecting ourselves with the cosmic cycles governing our universe.

ABOUT VISHNUSAHASRANAAMA
The Vedas affirm that God is neither accessible to words nor to mind. It is said that you cannot comprehend the Paramatma with the human mind alone, even if you spend all your life trying! Given this infinite nature of the Paramatma, who is not governed or constrained by any of the physical laws as we know them, the choice of a thousand names of Vishnu by Bhishma should be recognized as a representation of some of his better known qualities that are repeatedly described in our great epics.
Some might say that they do not understand the meaning of the Sanskrit words, & therefore do not feel comfortable chanting them. But learning the chanting of prayers even without knowing the meaning is a worthwhile act, & can be compared to finding a box of treasure without the key. As long as we have the box, we can open it whenever we get the key of knowledge later. The treasure will be there already.
Others might feel that they do not know the correct Sanskrit pronunciation, & do not want to chant incorrectly. There is an analogy of a mother to whom a child goes and asks for an orange. The child does not know how to pronounce the word "orange" and so asks for "ange". The mother does not turn away the child & does not refuse to give the child the orange just because the child does not know how to pronounce the word.
It is the bhaava (spirit) that matters, & so as long as one chants the name of God with sincerity, considerations such as not knowing the meaning, not knowing the pronunciation, etc, do not matter, & God will confer His blessings on us, there is no way a devotee of Vishnu can meet with any dishonor or disgrace of any kind.

night shot for the baby
To make our feel a reality, the boy started crying. We thought, the pain of the prick and the reaction of the medicine might be triggering fever, we gave him Crocin, a medicinal composition controlling fever. despite this we could not get any respite.
It was 11.00 pm when I went to bed. His mother breastfed him, thinking he may be hungry. Even after that, his irritation resulting in crying did not cease. Then I felt, that Only our trusted Lord srinivasa, should only help the kid to be free from the pain and irritation and possible onset of fever.
From that very moment I st rated chanting names of God, narayana,Srinivasa, janardhana vasudeva, till I went to sleep. After each of chanting I added oh, God relieve the kid from the pain and fever.
I woke up only at 5-15 am. Till that time I did not hear any sound from the baby. After I woke up ,I just peeped into the room where the baby was sleeping, The mother, The G.M
and the kid were in deep slumber.
At 6.00am the baby started making sound. This made the mother and the G.M to come out of their sleep. Then, I asked Sarasa, The G.M. about how baby and they slept that night. I was told that they, all the three got undisturbed sleep.
Hearing this I was trilled. For my prayers must have reached and the Lord answered my prayers. This feel was so acute in me that I was overfilled with emotions and thanking words to the God could not be uttered. With filled heart I thanked my God,in silence.
